What Is Mifepristone (RU-486)?
Mifepristone, also known as RU-486, is a clinically approved medication used to medically terminate early-stage pregnancies—typically up to 10 weeks (70 days) from the first day of your last period. It is commonly used as the first step in a 2-step abortion process, followed by Misoprostol.

How It Works
Mifepristone works by blocking progesterone, a hormone required to sustain a pregnancy. Without progesterone, the uterine lining breaks down, causing the pregnancy to detach from the uterus. Within 24–48 hours, a second medication—Misoprostol (Cytotec)—is usually taken to induce uterine contractions and expel the pregnancy tissue.

Usage Guidelines

• Dosage: One tablet (200mg), taken orally

• Follow-Up: Misoprostol 800mcg (usually 4 tablets) taken 24–48 hours later

• Success Rate: Over 95% when both medications are used properly

• Duration: Use within 10 weeks of pregnancy

Side Effects (Expected & Temporary):
